The University of Chicago Medicine is committed to fostering a corporate culture of ethical behavior and integrity in all matters related to compliance with the laws and regulations that govern the delivery of health care. This aspiration is central to supporting patient care, research, and teaching at the University of Chicago Medicine.

The University of Chicago Medicine established an Office of Corporate Compliance (OCC) dedicated to serving the patients, employees, and vendors of the Medical Center by fostering a corporate culture of ethical behavior and integrity. The OCC administers a Health Care Integrity Program that places particular emphasis on compliance with billing, coding, and documentation requirements and relationships with industry. Additionally, the OCC, through the HIPAA Privacy Program, supports compliance with the privacy and security standards set forth in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.

The OCC provides information and tools to support employees, faculty, and students in their efforts to protect the confidentiality of health information and adhere to the Health Care Integrity Program and Standards of Conduct principles which include the following:

  • Comply with health care laws and regulations
  • Provide medically necessary care to patients
  • Manage business relationships appropriately
  • Maintain accurate and reliable corporate records regarding billing and other transactions
  • Encourage employee loyalty
